light basics and vocabulary

Butterfly (or Paramount) -- light above, makes butterfly pattern (hides below chin), glamour shots, can be done with 1 light and boom optional,

Loop -- ideal for people with avg oval shaped faces, very similar to butterfly. can be done with 1 or 2 lights

Rembrandt -- light on half the face, one side of the face lit, for dark and mysterious "themes" or senses, drama. One light or two lights (sometimes 3)

Split -- key light is farther to the side or even behind the subject. Dramatic lighting,  splits face in two halves , similar to rembrandt, one or two lights

Broad and Short --one side very lit, the other not so much. makes someones face more broad, widen face. can be done with 1 light, 2nd can soften shadow

Fill light- light used to kill shadows
Key light (main light)- strong backlight, main light
Hair light- emphasizes an aspect, usually hair
Background light- helps clarify background
Shadowless- lights from all directions, no shadows
Hard light- strong lightlights and shadows result
Soft light- soft highlights and shadows
Grey card- only reflects 18% light (matte)
Reflector-shape and intensify light
Diffuser- helps soften highlights and shadows, reduces contrast incleases beam angle
Intensity (Strength, or how to set shutter speed and aperture's appropriate to portraits)- strength of the light
3:1 lighting ratio-occurs when the light discrepancy between two light sources is one and a half f-stops.

Direction: where is it coming from
Intensity:how bright is it
Color: what color is it?
Contrast: is the trasition subtle or sudden?
Hardness:  what do the edges look like?

science fair proposal

1. Group members:
sami nick
2. Topic/Scientific Question:

Ask a Question: The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where?

And, in order for the scientific method to answer the question it must be about something that you can measure, preferably with a number.

What type of light is the best for light painting?
3. Hypothesis (scientific question that you will answer):

Construct a Hypothesis: A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work:
"If _____[I use laser light _____, then _____the light painting will turn out better__

You must state your hypothesis in a way that you can easily measure, and of course, your hypothesis should be constructed in a way to help you answer your original question.

4. Materials List:

5. Equipment List:
camera, laser lights
6. Resource List (List of web sites that you can use as resources to help you with your project):

Flash Photography Basics

  • Every flash photo is 2 exposures in 1
  • Ambient light and flash will contribute
  • Fill flash can be used in backlit or sidelit situations
  • flash exposure is not affected by shutter speed
  • flash illumination is dramatically affected by distance
  • with automatic flash metering, the flash illum is measure after the shutter is pressed, the flash adjusts
  • every slr has a maximum flash sync shutter speed
  • diffusers and light bouncing are great tricks to prevent problems while shooting I.E.  red eye
  • it is possible to change the order when flash fires using rear curtain sync
  • tripod for night portrait mode
  • removing the flash helps eliminate redye and shadows
  • use a light stand with flash
