Flash Photography Basics

  • Every flash photo is 2 exposures in 1
  • Ambient light and flash will contribute
  • Fill flash can be used in backlit or sidelit situations
  • flash exposure is not affected by shutter speed
  • flash illumination is dramatically affected by distance
  • with automatic flash metering, the flash illum is measure after the shutter is pressed, the flash adjusts
  • every slr has a maximum flash sync shutter speed
  • diffusers and light bouncing are great tricks to prevent problems while shooting I.E.  red eye
  • it is possible to change the order when flash fires using rear curtain sync
  • tripod for night portrait mode
  • removing the flash helps eliminate redye and shadows
  • use a light stand with flash
