light basics and vocabulary

Butterfly (or Paramount) -- light above, makes butterfly pattern (hides below chin), glamour shots, can be done with 1 light and boom optional,


Loop -- ideal for people with avg oval shaped faces, very similar to butterfly. can be done with 1 or 2 lights

Rembrandt -- light on half the face, one side of the face lit, for dark and mysterious "themes" or senses, drama. One light or two lights (sometimes 3)

Split -- key light is farther to the side or even behind the subject. Dramatic lighting,  splits face in two halves , similar to rembrandt, one or two lights

Broad and Short --one side very lit, the other not so much. makes someones face more broad, widen face. can be done with 1 light, 2nd can soften shadow

Fill light- light used to kill shadows
Key light (main light)- strong backlight, main light
Hair light- emphasizes an aspect, usually hair
Background light- helps clarify background
Shadowless- lights from all directions, no shadows
Hard light- strong lightlights and shadows result
Soft light- soft highlights and shadows
Grey card- only reflects 18% light (matte)
Reflector-shape and intensify light
Diffuser- helps soften highlights and shadows, reduces contrast incleases beam angle
Intensity (Strength, or how to set shutter speed and aperture's appropriate to portraits)- strength of the light
3:1 lighting ratio-occurs when the light discrepancy between two light sources is one and a half f-stops.



Direction: where is it coming from
Intensity:how bright is it
Color: what color is it?
Contrast: is the trasition subtle or sudden?
Hardness:  what do the edges look like?
